**Thesis check — intact.** Hegseth is fully in post and operating as of Aug 12: he spent early August lobbying Congress for a [$350B Pentagon funding request](https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5967749-house-republicans-defense-funding-hegseth-pentagon/), headlined the [Joint Base Lindsey Graham renaming on Aug 10](https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/10/politics/hegseth-graham-charleston-pentagon-funding), and Trump publicly rejected removal rumors this month — [“smart guy… one of my best,” no plans to remove him](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-pete-hegseth-defense-secretary-rcna591243).
